Composition Writing

Students practise constructing compositions, using 5 Steps. The process teaches students to think about the structure of their texts and plan in advance. Sample texts and questions come from HSC Online.

Kanji: Tasks

Students work on two tasks relating to kanji. In the first they look at how a stroke can be added to the kanji for “day” to form a new kanji. In the second, they form kanji compounds using cards.

Speech Creation

Students are guided through the process of creating a speech to be presented to their Japanese class. The topics covered by the flowcharts are: About Japan, Event/Festival, My Hobby, My Dreams and Social Problems. The speeches are 1 to 2 minutes in length.

Location of Objects

Students complete worksheet(s) on giving the location of objects around the classroom.

Role Play: Japanese Tea

Students work in groups of four to write a script and role play a difficult situation involving some bad tasting tea! Julie doesn’t wish to offend her Japanese hosts so she distracts them with questions about their house.

How We Use Water

Students will practise numbers as they discuss the percentage of water in plants and animals. They will then brainstorm verbs relating to water use and discuss Australia’s and Japan’s use of water.

Mystery Train Around Japan

Students become familiar with the names of major cities and famous mountains in Japan by filling out a worksheet which takes them all over the country. Students move around the classroom to find out what their next stop on the journey is.

Me and My Family

Students work through examples of the conjunctions listed above then complete a cloze exercise in the form of a letter.

QUIZ ON JAPAN

About Japan- worksheets

Students learn about the geographical position of Japan in relation to Australia, learn the names of Japan’s main islands and complete a true/false quiz with 15 questions about Japan and its culture.

Role Play: World Events Report

Students prepare and perform a skit in which a TV show host asks for updates and events via satellite from several different journalists around the world. Language: Weather and time around the world

Skit: Koala at Customs

Students prepare and perform a funny, short (1 page) skit that takes place in Japan. There are two parts: the Passenger and the Officer. The passenger is found to have concealed a live koala in their bag.

Skit: Make a Japanese TV Commercial

Students choose/create a product that will be promoted in their TV advertisement. Students work in teams to write and rehearse the ad. They can use the samples given or create their own. This activity could begin by viewing some Japanese commercials on the internet.

Information Gap: Daily Routine

Students work through a series of information gap exercises on the topic of daily routine; what time different activities occur.

Creating a Restaurant Menu

Students look at a Japanese menu and discuss Japanese food. They may also proceed to a role play which takes place in a restaurant.

Video Production in the Classroom

Students use their higher-order thinking skills and creativity to devise scenarios, student roles, props, lighting, editing techniques for a video project of their choice.

Using Transport to Go to Places

Students use this reading material as a reading task, card games and task sheets to learn the pattern 「TransportationでPlaceに いきます。」.
