Annual Events: ひなまつり

ひなまつり is “Girls’ Day” or “Doll’s Day” in English. This is an annual event to pray for the healthy growth of girls, and many families celebrate by displaying dolls.

Origin of ひなまつり

The origin of ひなまつりis said to come from the Chinese custom of purifying oneself in a river to ward off evil spirits. In Japan during the Heian period (794-1185), the custom became known as “ながしびな (floating dolls)”, in which bad luck was transferred to simple dolls made of paper or clay and floated down a river. It was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that people started to display ひなにんぎょう (Hina-dolls) as they do today.
