Nihon no Haru – Flipbook and Activity
Students explore spring in Japan through a flipbook and related activities.

ひなまつり is “Girls’ Day” or “Doll’s Day” in English. This is an annual event to pray for the healthy growth of girls, and many families celebrate by displaying dolls.
The origin of ひなまつりis said to come from the Chinese custom of purifying oneself in a river to ward off evil spirits. In Japan during the Heian period (794-1185), the custom became known as “ながしびな (floating dolls)”, in which bad luck was transferred to simple dolls made of paper or clay and floated down a river. It was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that people started to display ひなにんぎょう (Hina-dolls) as they do today.
Through the slides, students learn about ひなまつり and what people do on that day.
You can change the language in the slides to suit your students’ Japanese level. There is also additional information in the slide notes. Please refer to it as needed.
Have fun learning about ひなまつり!

Let’s have a ひなまつり party by making some decorations, cooking, and singing a ひなまつり song.
