ANNUAL EVENTS: KODOMO NO HI

ABOUT こどもの日

こどもの日ひ (Children’s Day) is an event held each year on 5 May. Historically, during the Edo Period, families of samurai began to celebrate Tango no sekku (a day to pray for the healthy growth of boys) on 5 May. On this day, families with boys traditionally display よろい（Samurai armour）, かぶと（helmets） and dolls to protect boys from evil spirits. In 1948, this day became a national holiday called Children’s Day, a day to pray for the growth of all children.
