Students make a virtual visit to the Sumo stable, reading about the life of a novice sumo wrestler in Japan, オージーの山 (lit. Aussie’s Mountain).
Students work in teams to decipher the meaning of the sentences they are given. Each team then acts out the sentence to the class who must guess what it is in Japanese.
Students will practise numbers as they discuss the percentage of water in plants and animals. They will then brainstorm verbs relating to water use and discuss Australia’s and Japan’s use of water.
Students learn about the traditional Japanese food, omusubi, by learning how they are made and the popular fillings used. They answer questions in Japanese and read in hiragana the procedure for making them.
Students match daily life sentences to the picture of the sumo wrestler’s activities. The sumo wrestler’s activities also include the time he does them.
Students learn about the geography of Okinawa and how to describe holiday activities in Okinawa in Japanese.
Students circulate around the class asking questions of each other to find people who fit the description on the sheet. When found, students sign on the appropriate line.
Students practice verbal expressions for daily activities and create a wheel showing the times and activities they do in a day.
