Reading activities and strategies

Students read a text about the change to the new era of Reiwa using number of reading strategies. They then apply the information gained to a number of extension tasks.

Sumo Quiz

Students can learn about basic vocabulary,the origins and rules of sumo through quiz.

Sumo Picture Book

Students make a virtual visit to the Sumo stable, reading about the life of a novice sumo wrestler in Japan,  オージーの山  (lit. Aussie’s Mountain).

Fujisan

Students work through a series of activities on the theme of Mt Fuji with a focus on the environment and significant world heritage sites.

Quiz: Japanese Language

Students learn about Japanese language and culture through a quiz-style slideshow, which contains multiple choice questions with visual cues. Question and answer slides are followed by an explanatory slide which gives context and detail. Teachers’ notes provide further details.

Kanji: Radicals

Learn how to recognise the structure of kanji and become familiar with the concept of identifying and looking up a kanji compound by looking at its radical.

Kanji: Tasks

Students work on two tasks relating to kanji. In the first they look at how a stroke can be added to the kanji for “day” to form a new kanji. In the second, they form kanji compounds using cards.

Throw the Dice Game

Students practise their numbers in Japanese in this fun dice game. Groups work together to try and get up to the total number chosen by the teacher within their limit of throws.

Famous Places in Japan I

Students learn about the names of major cities and famous landmarks in Japan while they play card games.

My Name’s Meaning

Students work through activities on the cultural aspects of individuals’ names. Students research their own names, present a talk, learn kanji used in Japanese names and make meishi. There is also a Japanese text on Japanese names for senior students.
