Sumo Picture Book

Students make a virtual visit to the Sumo stable, reading about the life of a novice sumo wrestler in Japan,  オージーの山  (lit. Aussie’s Mountain).

Going Places Bingo

Students form groups and play a bingo game involving sentences which have time, transport and place words. Each group has one winner who has crossed out all the words on his/her cards first.

Mime and Guess

Students work in teams to decipher the meaning of the sentences they are given. Each team then acts out the sentence to the class who must guess what it is in Japanese.

Choosing a Sports Kurabu

Students work in pairs to decide which of the four sports clubs (gyms) they will join. Each student and their partner go to two clubs, ask some questions and share the information. They then discuss which club they will choose.

Time Bingo

Students listen to the clock times read out by the teacher and compete to be the first to fill out their bingo card of clock times they have chosen.

Sumo: A Day in the Life

Students match daily life sentences to the picture of the sumo wrestler’s activities. The sumo wrestler’s activities also include the time he does them.

Information Gap: Daily Routine

Students work through a series of information gap exercises on the topic of daily routine; what time different activities occur.

Survey: Daily Activities

Students circulate around the class asking questions of each other to find people who fit the description on the sheet. When found, students sign on the appropriate line.

Time Check with Clocks

Students work in pairs to set the clock at a particular time and converse in Japanese about what time it is.

Daily Routine

Students practice verbal expressions for daily activities and create a wheel showing the times and activities they do in a day.
